How to File KRA Nil Returns on Your Phone or Laptop
Those who fail to file their nil returns in time will be charged a penalty of Ksh. 2,000 or even more. This is because it is mandatory to file your KRA return as per the law.
As a taxpayer, you are required to file tax returns whether you have earned any income or not. Filing nil returns at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is easy as long as you have your PIN.
In this article, I am going to share with you’re the steps on how to file KRA nil returns.
Nil returns are meant for individuals who have no employment and the largest people in this gap are students. Many students usually file nil returns since they aren’t entitled to any employment.
So if you are not employed or you are a student then this guide is suitable for you.
Steps to File KRA Nil Returns
The process is relatively easy and can be done online via iTax.
The following are the steps to follow to file your nil returns successfully. Before you begin you must ensure you have KRA pin since you won’t be able to access iTax portal if you are not registered.
Step 1
Login to iTax portal via the link www.itax.kra.go.ke.
Enter your PIN, password then answer the security question to login in.
Navigate to the main menu bar and look for “returns”
Click on “nil returns”.
Step 2
Enter the following details as required.
Tax obligation, enter residential
Period from: e.g. 1/1/2021.
Period to: e.g. 31/12/2021.
Click submit and you will get an acknowledgment message which will be nice for you
Note:
The essence of filing returns isn’t just to report your income/expenses, but also to enable the KRA authority to collect taxes from all citizens. This is why it is now a legal requirement for all registered businesses in Kenya to file their KRA returns on time. If you fail to file your returns on time and without reasonable cause, then the Commissioner can impose a penalty on you or your business.
